The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the Philippine earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.6 and struck off the coast of Davao Oriental at around 10:30 a.m. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, with a depth of 10 kilometers, making it strong enough to be felt across several provinces in Mindanao.

Tsunami Warnings Urge Residents to Move Inland

Following the quake, PHIVOLCS and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for coastal towns in the southern region. Residents near shorelines were advised to move to higher ground as precautionary measures. Officials warned that small to moderate waves could reach nearby coasts and that monitoring would continue until the threat was cleared.

In its bulletin, the PTWC warned that hazardous waves up to three meters high could strike coastlines within 300 kilometers of the quake’s epicenter. The advisory also noted that smaller tsunami waves could reach parts of Indonesia and Palau, prompting regional monitoring agencies to stay on alert.

PHIVOLCS confirmed that sea-level changes were being closely observed and emphasized that communities should avoid returning to coastal zones until the all-clear signal is announced. Authorities assured the public that ongoing monitoring and coordination with local disaster offices would continue until the tsunami threat was lifted.

Aftershocks Recorded Across the Region

Several aftershocks were reported in the hours following the main earthquake, with magnitudes ranging from 5.5 to 6.0. Disaster management teams were deployed to assess any damage, while authorities reminded residents to stay away from unstable structures and remain alert for possible further tremors.
