TV5 Cuts Ties With ABS-CBN Over Rising Production Costs and Ongoing Content Rights Dispute

TV5 has ended its partnership with ABS-CBN, a development confirmed through the ABS-CBN News’ official Facebook page. ABS-CBN, which previously went off the air under the Duterte administration, assured its supporters that it will continue to do its best to keep operations moving despite the setback.

“We know we have obligations to fulfill, and we’re working as hard as we can to honor them. But whetever happens, our service to you will continue.”

Why TV5 Ends Partnership With ABS-CBN

TV5 ended its partnership with ABS-CBN after rising production costs made the collaboration harder to sustain, and content rights negotiations reached a standstill. The network opted to pull back to protect its budget and redirect resources to in-house programming, signaling a shift in its long-term strategy.

ABS-CBN Shut Down Under Duterte Admin

ABS-CBN went off the air in May 2020 after the House of Representatives denied its application for a new franchise. The National Telecommunications Commission issued a cease-and-desist order once the franchise expired, cutting off the network’s free-to-air broadcast. The shutdown followed months of hearings during which lawmakers raised allegations of violations, which ABS-CBN repeatedly denied. The closure became one of the most significant media blows in the country, affecting thousands of workers and reshaping the national broadcast landscape.

The decision adds another challenge to ABS-CBN’s recovery, yet the network remains determined to operate despite the loss of a major partner. All eyes are now on how TV5 and ABS-CBN will reshape their lineups after this split.
