“He dedicated much of his life to the service of the Filipino people. At this time, we humbly ask for the public’s understanding as our family takes a brief moment to grieve privately and honor his memory together in quiet and in peace.”

The Supreme Court allowed the 91-year-old politician to post bail, saying evidence against him was weak but activists have been angered by the decision, saying it is a sign of special treatment given to the rich and powerful. Juan Ponce Enrile Political Career Timeline

Enrile’s career spanned over seven decades, shaping many of the Philippines’ most pivotal political eras. His rise from defense minister to Senate leader showed his lasting influence and adaptability through the nation’s changing political landscape.

Defense Minister under Ferdinand Marcos Sr. (1965–1986)

Enrile began his national prominence as Secretary of National Defense under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. He was a key figure during the martial law years, overseeing the armed forces and security policies that defined that period. His role made him both influential and controversial, given his close association with the Marcos regime.

Key Player in the 1986 People Power Revolution

In February 1986, Enrile broke away from Marcos and joined then–Armed Forces Vice Chief Fidel V. Ramos in a military uprising that sparked the People Power Revolution. This defection became one of the decisive moments that led to the fall of the Marcos dictatorship and the restoration of democracy.

Senate Tenure and Leadership Roles (1987–2013)

Following the 1986 revolution, Enrile was elected to the Senate and served several terms. He became known for his sharp legal mind and command of parliamentary procedures. Enrile was elected Senate President twice. First, in 2008, and the second time, in 2010, presiding over significant national inquiries, including the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Return as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel (2022–2025)

Decades after his first service under the Marcos administration, Enrile returned to public office under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in 2022 as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel. At 98, he was one of the oldest officials to hold a Cabinet-level post, offering legal and political advice to the President until his passing.
