Juan Ponce Enrile’s Political Career

Juan Ponce Enrile, now 101 years old, has a political career that spans more than seven decades, making him one of the most enduring figures in Philippine politics. He first gained national attention during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, serving in major Cabinet positions, including Justice Secretary and later Minister of National Defense. Enrile became one of Marcos’s most trusted officials, helping implement martial law in 1972, a period known for both government infrastructure projects and reports of human rights violations.

In 1986, Enrile’s decision to withdraw support from the Marcos government during the People Power Revolution changed his public image from a loyal enforcer to a reform advocate. Together with then–Armed Forces Vice Chief of Staff Fidel V. Ramos, his defection was a turning point that contributed to the success of the revolution and the rise of Corazon Aquino’s administration. After this, Enrile served in Congress and was elected senator multiple times. As Senate President, he influenced national policies on constitutional reform, defense, and investigations into corruption.

Despite being involved in controversies such as the 2014 plunder case, Enrile has remained an active and resilient figure in politics. His long service reflects the shifts in the Philippine political landscape, showing his ability to adapt and maintain influence through periods of both dictatorship and democracy.
