Trudeau Replacement: Ex-Central Banker Mark Carney Will Be The Next Canada PM
Canada has a new prime minister. Ex-central Banker Mark Carney won 85.9% of the Liberal Party vote on Sunday, March 9. Carney, 59, will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who filed his resignation in January. Trudeau will remain Canada’s PM until Carney is sworn in in the coming days.
“Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses and we cannot let him succeed and we won’t,” Carney said.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump postponed the 25% tariffs on most goods from Mexico and some from Canada. The planned tariff increase had already sparked economic concerns and market fears.
Carney is a former Goldman Sachs executive who worked for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto before he was appointed deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003.
