Strong Quake Strikes Cebu, Leaves Casualties and Damages Churches, Homes
- A magnitude 6.7–6.9 earthquake hit near Bogo City, Cebu, triggering a tsunami advisory.
- Power outages and school closures followed, with authorities warning of aftershocks.
- PHILVOCS: No tsunami waves expected.

Tuesday, Sept. 20 (Philippines) – A powerful earthquake struck Cebu late Tuesday night, shaking homes and buildings across the province and sending residents rushing into the streets. The tremor, measured at magnitude 6.7–6.9 with an epicenter near Bogo City, was strong enough to trigger a tsunami advisory and cause widespread concern in nearby coastal areas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a tsunami advisory following the event. The agency said no large tsunami waves were expected, but the advisory was released as a precautionary measure given the quake’s shallow depth of around 10 kilometers. Local disaster risk reduction offices immediately urged fishing communities and coastal residents to move to higher ground until the advisory was lifted.
Casualties and Power Disruptions
Authorities confirmed fatalities when the magnitude 6.7–6.9 earthquake struck northern Cebu. The quake also knocked out electricity across Cebu and nearby islands. Transmission lines tripped, and a substation in Daanbantayan sustained damage, leading to widespread blackouts in northern towns. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported that Leyte, Samar, and parts of Bohol were disconnected from the Cebu-Negros-Panay grid, which complicated communication and delayed immediate rescue efforts. Crews were dispatched overnight to restore power, though authorities warned that some areas could face extended power outages as safety inspections continue.
