Nikolov Brothers Lead Bulgaria’s Charge at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship
The Nikolov brothers, Moni and Aleks, have been among the standout performers of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, helping Bulgaria secure four straight victories and a coveted spot in the quarterfinals. Their remarkable run continued on Monday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, where Bulgaria delivered a dominant sweep over Portugal with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-13.
Carrying a Family Legacy
While their names have quickly become crowd favorites in this year’s championship, the brothers are driven by more than just victories. For Moni Nikolov, only 18 years old and already proving himself as an elite setter, the motivation runs deep—it is about honoring the legacy of their father, Vladimir Nikolov. Vladimir was a central figure in Bulgarian volleyball and part of the last national team to win a World Championship medal, claiming bronze in Japan in 2006.
“I’m proud of myself and my brother. I think we’re trying our hardest to continue his legacy, continue his name—Nikolov,” Moni shared after their latest win. “Hopefully, we can medal in this tournament, but if not, then I know we’ve given it our all, and he should be proud of us for that.”
Aleks Nikolov’s Scoring Power
At 21 years old, Aleks Nikolov has established himself as one of the top offensive players in the competition. After the Round of 16, he sits as the tournament’s second-best scorer with 90 total points, composed of 80 attacks, six aces, and four blocks. His ability to score consistently has been pivotal in Bulgaria’s unbeaten run, making him one of the athletes to watch as the tournament advances into its critical stages.
Moni Nikolov’s Emerging Role
Though younger and less experienced, Moni has been equally impressive in his own right. Ranked seventh among setters, he has also tallied 30 points, placing him 33rd overall in scoring—a notable achievement for a playmaker whose primary responsibility is to orchestrate offensive plays. His calmness on the court and his connection with his teammates have given Bulgaria a balance that complements Aleks’s aggressive scoring.
Eyes on the Quarterfinals
Despite their current success, the Nikolov brothers know that Bulgaria’s biggest tests lie ahead. With the quarterfinals scheduled for Thursday, they will face either world No. 4 USA or No. 6 Slovenia, both of whom present formidable challenges.
Aleks acknowledged the road ahead, emphasizing the team’s mindset. “I don’t wanna get ahead of myself, but we’re feeling confident, and you know we’re gonna come out swinging in the quarterfinals—whether it’s Slovenia or USA,” he said.
Bulgaria’s Hopes for the Future
Bulgaria has not medaled in the World Championship since Vladimir Nikolov’s bronze-winning squad in 2006. Now, nearly two decades later, his sons are spearheading a new generation of talent determined to bring glory back to Bulgarian volleyball. Whether or not the team secures a medal, the performances of Aleks and Moni have already captured the imagination of fans and reignited hopes for the nation’s volleyball program.
For both brothers, this tournament is about more than wins and statistics—it is about carrying forward their father’s legacy while carving out their own path on the international stage.
