SoKor Government Lifted Martial Law Imposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol After Lawmaker Voting

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 4:30 a.m. South Korean local time, the SoKor government lifted the martial law imposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol. After the lawmakers voted to reject the military rule, police and military personnel left the grounds of parliament.

Why Yoon Suk Yeol Declared Martial Law?

Yoon declared “emergency martial law,” alleging the opposition to antistate activities. In the previous report, SoKor President said in a televised speech, “Through this martial law, I will rebuild and protect the free Republic of Korea, which is falling into the abyss of national ruin. To this end, I will definitely eradicate the anti-state forces who are the main culprit of country’s ruination and conduct vicious activities.”

Some publications reported that the current President of the country may face impeachment over a past scandal. The allegation suggests that he and First Lady Kim Keon Hee improperly influenced the conservative ruling People Power Party to nominate a specific candidate for a parliamentary by-election in 2022. Allegedly, this was done at the request of Myung Tae-kyun, an election broker and founder of a polling agency who conducted free opinion surveys for Yoon before he became president.
