Dan Foster Announces Retirement After Four Decades with MLBPAA
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) has announced that its longtime Chief Executive Officer, Dan Foster, will retire after 40 years of service and leadership. Foster, who has been instrumental in transforming the organization, will remain in his role until April 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth leadership transition. The MLBPAA confirmed that current Chief Operating Officer Geoff Hixson will succeed him as the next CEO.
Four Decades of Service and Growth
Since joining the MLBPAA in the 1980s, Foster’s leadership has guided the association from a small alumni network into a respected national nonprofit that supports and advocates for former players. His vision helped establish the MLBPAA as the premier alumni organization in professional sports, connecting players across generations while upholding the integrity and legacy of baseball.
Former MLBPAA President and Hall of Famer Jim Kaat recalled Foster’s early years with the organization. “In 1986, I met Dan when I was appointed president of the MLBPAA. It was soon apparent to me that of the few employees we had at that time, he was the most conscientious and passionate about making the MLBPAA a successful organization,” Kaat said. “I suggested to the board that we make him the CEO. That decision proved to be the right one as Dan has led the organization to heights beyond our expectations.”
Programs That Defined a Legacy
Under Foster’s direction, the MLBPAA launched several hallmark initiatives, including the Legends for Youth Clinic Series, which connects current and former professional players with young athletes through baseball clinics and mentorship programs. The association also developed career transition and development services to help retired players adjust to life after baseball, as well as numerous charitable partnerships that have benefited communities nationwide.
“His leadership and dedication have been tremendous,” said current MLBPAA President and Hall of Famer Jim Thome. “Dan’s genuine care for former players and passion for our mission have made it a privilege to work alongside him.”
Championing Former Players’ Rights
Foster’s tenure was also marked by strong advocacy for player benefits and recognition. Under his leadership, the MLBPAA worked closely with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) to secure annual payments for pre-1980 non-vested players who were previously excluded from pension benefits. More recently, Foster played a key role in efforts to secure payment opportunities for living Negro League players, reflecting the organization’s ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion in baseball’s legacy.
“Dan Foster is the definition of the right man at the right time,” said MLBPAA Chairman Steve Rogers. “When the vision of the founding members started to gain traction, it became evident the Alumni Association needed a leader who could build the organization from the ground up. Dan has invested his heart and soul into doing exactly that.”
A Legacy of Leadership and Integrity
Throughout his four-decade tenure, Foster has been recognized not only for his administrative achievements but also for his unwavering dedication to the baseball community. His leadership style emphasized transparency, collaboration, and a deep respect for the game and its players.
Under Foster, the MLBPAA has grown into a multifaceted organization that not only supports former players but also strengthens baseball’s connection with fans and future generations. The association continues to focus on charity, education, and community outreach, reflecting Foster’s core belief that baseball remains a platform for positive change.
As the MLBPAA prepares for its next chapter under Geoff Hixson’s leadership, Foster’s influence will remain embedded in the organization’s culture and mission. His four decades of service have left an enduring mark on the sport, and the association remains committed to honoring his legacy by continuing to protect, support, and celebrate the players who shaped Major League Baseball’s history.
