Australian Captain Pat Cummins Describes ICC World Cup 2023 as ‘Physically Taxing’ for Bowlers
Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian cricket team, characterized the ICC World Cup 2023 as the most physically demanding format for fast bowlers, as batsmen consistently achieved record-breaking scores. In the initial six days of the tournament, South Africa set the highest-ever World Cup total of 428 against Sri Lanka in New Delhi, where the two innings combined for a tournament record of 754 runs. The tournament also witnessed ten centuries scored in the first eight matches, reflecting the challenge for bowlers.
Cummins remarked, “It’s actually quite a physical format, I find it probably the most physically taxing if you’re playing two or three games in a week,” as he prepared for their second World Cup match against South Africa. He pointed out the substantial physical demands placed on bowlers in 50-over matches, as they need to cover significant distances. In contrast, a single excellent over can often be match-winning in T20 cricket.
The Australian team faced a six-wicket loss to India in their ICC World Cup 2023 opener, a low-scoring encounter at Chennai. Cummins, a seasoned fast bowler, acknowledged the unique challenges of one-day cricket. Despite facing initial struggles in his career to balance different formats, Cummins expressed contentment with his form in ODI cricket.
Australia is gearing up to face South Africa, with Cummins expecting an exciting clash between two similar teams. South Africa recently secured a series victory over Australia, despite initially trailing 0-2.
All-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who missed the first match due to a hamstring injury, is fit and available for selection, providing a boost to the Australian squad. However, opener Travis Head remains sidelined due to a hand injury.
