UMG’s Motion to Dismiss Drake’s ‘Not Like Us’ Lawsuit Calls It ‘Misguided’
UMG vs. Drake beef battle continues. UMG, a record label where two rappers were signed, filed a motion to dismiss Drake’s lawsuit, labeling it “misguided.”
In the lawsuit filed on Monday, March 17, UMG stated that the “most successful recording artist of all time, lost the rap battle.” In the same suit, on page 7, the company claimed, “Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds.”
The suit referenced verses from Drake’s song in which he alleged that Lamar was involved in domestic abuse. Also, Drake’s Family Matters verse claimed that Lamar’s children with Whitney are Dave Free’s. The company also referenced Euphoria’s verses response to Drake and J.Cole’s First Person Shooter.
In January, the Canadian rapper sued his own record label in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The suit alleges UMG defamed him by spreading a “false and malicious narrative” when it promoted Lamar’s diss track Not Like Us. What’s weird is that Kendrick was not mentioned in the suit.
2024 is the unforgettable beef of the two rappers. In March 2024, Lamar clapped back at J. Cole and Drake’s First Person Shooter, which was released in 2023. K-Dot responded to J. Cole’s verse with his own on Future and Metro Boomin’s hit “Like That.”
“F–k sneak dissin’, first-person shooter / I hope they came with three switches,” he raps. “Motherf–k the big three / N—a, it’s just big me.”
On April 19, 2024, Drake released Lamar diss track, Push Ups, alluding Lamar’s deal with label Top Dawg Entertainment, Lamar’s fiancée Whitney Alford and making fun of Lamar’s five-foot-five height.
“Hugs and kisses, man, don’t tell me ’bout no switches / I’ll be rockin’ every f–kin’ chain I own next visit, ay / I be with some bodyguards like Whitney,” he raps. “Top say drop, your little midget ass better f–kin’ / Ay, better drop and give me 50.”
Drake’s single’s cover art features a size 7 shoe sticker.
In April 2024, Drake dropped another Lamar diss, Taylor Made Freestyle, hours after releasing Push Ups Drake. This single made headlines because the Canadian rapper used artificial intelligence-generated voices of Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, whom Lamar has cited as inspirations. He put down the LA native.
“Nephew, what the f–k you really ’bout to do? / We passed you the torch at the House of Blues / And now you gotta do some dirty work, you know how to move, right? Right?” Drake raps in an AI Snoop-style voice.
Since Drake did not ask permission to use Tupac’s voice, Shakur’s estate sent a cease and desist in the same month. Drake removed the song from streaming platforms. Lamar responded with his own diss track, Euphoria, warning message to Drake where K-Dot raps “Don’t tell lie about me, and I won’t tell truth about you. The diss track title refers to the HBO show of the same name, on which Drake is an executive producer.
“I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress / Surprised you wanted that feature request / You know that we got some shit to address,” K-Dot raps. “I even hate when you say the word ‘n—a,’ but that’s just me, I guess / Some s–t just cringeworthy, it ain’t even gotta be deep, I guess.”
On May 3, 2024, the Compton rapper dropped another Drake diss, 6:16 in LA. In this track, Lamar claimed someone at Drizzy’s OVO music label was leaking dirt to him on the Canadian rapper.
“Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me?/ Fake bully, I hate bullies / You must be a terrible person,” he raps. “Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it.”
Decoding what’s behind the title, it makes fun of Drake’s songs that have locations and times in their names, such as “6PM in New York,” “9AM in Dallas,” and “4PM in Calabasas.”
On the same date, Drake fired back with Family Matters. In this track, the Canadian rapper accused the Compton rapper of abusing his fiancée, Whitney Alford. He also alleged Alford cheated on Lamar with one of his collaborators, Dave Free.
“You the black messiah wifing up a mixed queen / And hit vanilla cream to help out with your self-esteem / On some Bobby s–t, I wanna know what Whitney need,” he spits, seemingly alluding to Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s relationship.
“When you put your hands on your girl, is it self-defense ’cause she’s bigger than you?”
In his Instagram post, he captioned this song, “Stop trying to piece together what I know and go pick up the pieces of your broken home.”
Hip-hop fans were surprised when Lamar dropped a song one hour after Drake’s Family Matters released. The opening of the song is so eerie. Humble hitmaker’s Meet the Grahams narrating letters to Drake’s family. The song accused Drake of being a deadbeat dad, referencing his 7-year-old son.
“You lied about your son, you lied about your daughter, huh, you lied about them other kids that’s out there hoping that you come,” Lamar spits.
K-Dot also talks about Drake’s family, his rumored struggles with alcohol and gambling, as well as allegations of cosmetic surgery and Ozempic use for weight loss. What’s shocking is he said Drake is hiding an 11-year-old daughter.
“Get some discipline, don’t cut them corners like your daddy did,” Lamar raps. “F–k what Ozempic did. Don’t pay to play with them Brazilians, get a gym membership.”
Hours after releasing Meet the Grahams, Lamar released a kill shot track, Not Like Us. In this track, he pokes fun and alleging Drake of pedophilia.
“Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one.”
Lamar’s Not Like Us references Drake’s 2021 LP, “Certified Lover Boy,” in a verse: “’Certified Lover Boy’? Certified pedophiles.”
He also raps, “Why you trollin’ like a bitch? Ain’t you tired? / Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”
The Not Like Us cover art showcases what seems to be a bird’ s-eye view of Drake’s estate in Toronto, Canada. The image has been modified to look like a sex offender registry map, which usually marks the locations of convicted offenders’ residences.
Drake responded to Lamar’s diss track on May 5, with The Heart Part 6, denying all allegations. He answered the allegations regarding someone leaking information to Lamar. Drake claimed that all information told to Lamar , including that Drake had a secret daughter, was intentional and false.
Drake addressing PDF accusation by rapping, “You know, at least your fans are gettin’ some raps out of you / I’m happy I could motivate you / Bring you back to the game.”
He adds, “Just let me know when we’re gettin’ to the facts / Everything in my s–t is facts / I’m waitin’ on you to return the favor.”
