Schedule for 2024 Intramuros Grand Marian Procession Released
The schedule for this year’s Intramuros Grand Marian Procession (IGMP) has been released, with the event to take place on Dec. 1.
The IGMP has been organized by the Cofradia de Inmaculada Concepción and the Intramuros Administration (IA) every first Sunday of December since 1981. The procession is a revival of an ancient tradition observed by the Manila Cathedral since 1619 in honor of the Virgin Mary, particularly the cathedral’s titular feast of her immaculate conception every December 8.
With Manila being the first established diocese in the country, and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary as its cathedral’s titular feast, the Philippine Government recently made December 8 a public holiday in order for Catholics to attend and assist at masses and other liturgical services pertaining to the celebration.
For this year, the Cofradia would mostly feature images of the Virgin Mary that were canonically crowned by local bishops through the Vatican’s approval.
IGMP 2024 Schedule
According to an online poster on Facebook that was made public on Sunday (Nov. 3), the confraternity would organize a Mass of First Communion for young Catholics on the morning of Nov. 28.
On the afternoon of Dec. 1, the procession would be held after a Mass offered by Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula.
All events would be held inside, or within the vicinity of, the Manila Cathedral, while the procession would cover the main roads inside the old walled city of Manila called Intramuros.
Aside from the IA and the Archdiocese of Manila, the procession is also sponsored by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, especially in terms of event security.
