Poundland Abandons Aberdare Wilko Store Takeover Due to Raac Discovery

Poundland has decided to abandon its takeover plans for a former Wilko store in Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, after the discovery of Raac within the building. The store in Aberdare was originally scheduled to open its doors on Saturday.

The unexpected presence of potentially hazardous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) within the Cardiff Street building led Poundland to make the difficult decision to cancel the takeover. The decision followed the completion of surveys of the store, which were conducted on Thursday.

The surveys revealed the presence of Raac, a cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete that was predominantly used during the 1950s and 1990s and typically has a lifespan of about 30 years. Raac has been found in approximately 35 schools and public buildings across Wales, prompting further evaluations in numerous other locations.

A spokesperson for Poundland explained that the surveys were carried out shortly after gaining access to the property just “a few days ago.” Unfortunately, this means that Poundland is not in a position to proceed with the opening of the store as a Poundland location. Safety is of paramount importance for Poundland, as emphasized by the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also acknowledged the disappointment that this decision might bring to customers and staff. Poundland remains committed to addressing the situation and exploring alternative options for those affected, with a focus on addressing the matter as a priority in the coming days.

Pepco Group, the owner of Poundland in the UK, had previously agreed to take on the leases of several Wilko stores after Wilko went into administration in August. Poundland’s CEO, Barry Williams, expressed understanding and sympathy for the challenges faced by Wilko workers during this transition. In a statement issued at the time, the company affirmed that Wilko staff would receive priority when applying for new positions at Poundland stores.

On the other hand, the Rhondda Cynon Taf council expressed disappointment at this latest development. Poundland’s potential takeover of the former Wilko store was seen as a lifeline for the retail space in Aberdare. The council noted that it had not received any communication from Wilko or Poundland regarding this news and is eager to provide support to ensure the future viability of this retail space in the town center.

In conclusion, Poundland’s decision to abandon its plans to take over the former Wilko store in Aberdare was prompted by the discovery of Raac within the building. Safety considerations played a pivotal role in this decision. Poundland will now explore alternative options, with a focus on addressing the matter as a priority in the coming days. The Rhondda Cynon Taf council remains committed to supporting the future of this retail space in Aberdare.
