covid-19 rapid tests

Free COVID-19 Tests Now Available From The US Government

The United States government has made COVID-19 tests accessible for free, offering a simple process for ordering them.

Commencing this Monday, individuals can request up to four tests per American household via the official website, Covidtests.gov. Those lacking internet access can opt to call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) to place their test orders.

These at-home COVID-19 rapid tests are suitable for use whether or not someone exhibits symptoms. They are designed to remain effective until the end of the year. While certain test kits may display expiration dates, it’s worth noting that the US Food and Drug Administration has extended the validity of these tests.

Previously, the US government distributed more than 755 million free COVID-19 tests to individuals who requested them. However, the program had been temporarily suspended since May. In recent months, the United States has witnessed an increase in COVID-related hospitalizations, with weekly admissions surging to over three times their levels from two months ago.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people to consider COVID-19 testing if they experience any symptoms resembling those of COVID-19, such as a sore throat, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, or a fever. Additionally, individuals may want to take a test before attending large gatherings, such as concerts or conferences, especially if they haven’t received up-to-date vaccinations.

It’s also recommended that individuals test at least five days after coming into close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case, even if they remain asymptomatic. If the initial test yields a negative result, it is advisable to conduct a follow-up test 48 hours later.

The Biden administration has pledged to continue offering additional tests to those without insurance through numerous community outreach programs. To locate these government-supported programs providing free tests, individuals can search online through HRSA health centers, Test to Treat sites, or ICATT locations.

This renewed focus on testing coincides with the Biden administration’s plans to intensify its messaging regarding flu, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and COVID-19 vaccines, with a special emphasis on reaching higher-risk populations such as seniors and young children.
