Final Journey of Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Commences

In one of the last tributes to former first lady Rosalynn Carter, her motorcade is embarking on its journey from her hometown of Plains, Georgia, to Atlanta. This solemn procession marks the beginning of her repose in Atlanta, allowing the public an opportunity to pay their respects and bid their final farewells.

Legacy of a Humanitarian Advocate

Rosalynn Carter, who peacefully passed away at the age of 96 in her Plains home on November 19, devoted much of her life to humanitarian efforts. A staunch supporter of mental health reform and destigmatizing mental illness, she stood alongside her husband, former US President Jimmy Carter, for over 77 years. Despite her battle with dementia, Rosalynn Carter continued her advocacy until the end.

Homeward Bound

The Carters had returned to Plains after leaving the White House in 1981, residing there ever since. Jimmy Carter, now 99, began receiving home hospice care in February after a series of hospital stays. Their last public appearance was on September 23 during the annual peanut festival in Plains.

Nationwide Tributes

Over the past week, people from across the state and the nation have flocked to Plains to celebrate Rosalynn Carter’s life. The town, home to several hundred residents, is preparing to bid farewell to a remarkable figure who left an indelible mark on her community and the world.

Monday’s Ceremonies

The motorcade is scheduled to depart downtown Plains at 10 a.m., passing through Americus with a brief stop at a medical center. A departure ceremony will feature former members of Rosalynn Carter’s U.S. Secret Service Protection detail as honorary pallbearers. A wreath-laying ceremony at Georgia Southwestern State University, where Rosalynn Carter founded the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers in 1987, is part of the journey to Atlanta.

Public Repose and Tribute

A repose service will take place at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta on Monday afternoon, inviting the public to pay their respects from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. A private tribute service is scheduled for Tuesday at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University, with dignitaries including President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in attendance. A private funeral service for family and friends is set for Wednesday at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
