FedEx Philippines: Four Decades of Delivering Possibilities

In September 2024, FedEx is celebrating 40 years of its operations in the Philippines, marked with innovation, growth, and steadfast commitment to connecting people and possibilities.

Since 1984, FedEx has been driving advancements in the logistics industry in the Philippines, playing a vital role in elevating local businesses to the global stage.

Delivering Growth for Businesses

Over the years, FedEx has constantly evolved to meet the diverse needs of its customers. The launch of its direct service operations in 2013 enabled the company to directly oversee all logistics processes nationwide. In 2017, the opening of service hubs in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig and Clark, Pampanga, reinforced FedEx role as a key logistics solutions provider in the Asia-Pacific region.

In 2021, the establishment of the FedEx Clark Gateway Facility marked a significant milestone. The state-of-the-art facility, optimized for sorting up to 9,000 parcels per hour, addresses the rising demand for cold-chain logistics and e-commerce in the region. The facility’s expansive dedicated freight-handling area spans 630 square meters and supports the growing e-commerce demand of bulk shipments and large items.  With the current geo-political situation, the need for reliable air freight has become even more vital to global trade.

“As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, FedEx Philippines continues to deliver innovative solutions that keep pace with the changing needs of local businesses,” said Maribeth Espinosa, managing director of FedEx Philippines. “Our journey in the Philippines is a testament to our dedication to fostering economic growth, empowering Filipino businesses, and making a positive impact on local communities.”

FedEx is leveraging advanced technology to maximize operational capacity, enrich customer experience, and make supply chains smarter for everyone. The company is focused on advancing freight services and addressing the surging demand for bulk and cold-chain shipments by employing automated sorting systems, and advanced tracking technologies.

Delivering Opportunities for Employees

FedEx is driven by its foundational principle, called the PSP philosophy, which stands for People-Service-Profit. This philosophy emphasizes that by prioritizing FedEx employees, they provide outstanding service, which ultimately leads to profitability.

A huge part of the success of FedEx Philippines comes from team members across the organization who are dedicated to their work. For them to be successful, FedEx strives to create an exceptional workplace where the company’s employees are prioritized and recognized for their contributions. The company has been consistently recognized for its commitment to its employees, such as the recent attainment of seven awards at the prestigious HR Excellence Awards 2024 Philippines in September.

Delivering Positive Impact to Communities

Over the years, FedEx has made generous donations to local communities through its charitable arm, FedEx Cares.

The company’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and opportunities (DEI&O) has been a cornerstone of FedEx operations for the past 40 years. This is why FedEx is dedicated to empowering diverse voices and providing access to leadership, education and employment opportunities that inspire people to succeed and spread their wings.

One significant example of FedEx DEI&O initiatives is the three-year collaboration with Zonta Club of Makati and Environs through the Empowering Women Scholarship Program (EWSP). FedEx worked with Zonta to provide scholarships to 60 women in STEM at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, to help fund school fees for their graduating year.

FedEx cares

In addition to the USD 35,000 grant, FedEx employees arranged professional skills development webinars and career fairs. FedEx managers and employees offered guidance on resume writing, job interviews and career development in traditionally male-dominated industries like logistics.

The company’s commitment to DEI&O extends to people with disabilities. The company is dedicated to creating an inclusive workplace where individuals of all abilities have equal opportunities to thrive and succeed. Recognizing the value that diverse perspectives bring to the organization, FedEx ensures a safe and nurturing environment for all employees by implementing physical modifications to its facilities, such as ramp access, handrails, and non-slip flooring.

These efforts have been recognized with multiple awards, including a gold award at the HR Excellence Awards 2022 Philippines for the company’s efforts in “Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion” and “Excellence in HR Communication Strategy”. FedEx was also a recipient of the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) Disability Inclusive Workplace Award in 20xx.

By creating an inclusive environment and embracing equity, FedEx ensures that diverse perspectives and ideas contribute to advancing the company’s business objectives of driving innovation, improve employee morale, and enhance the company’s overall success.

Delivering What’s Next

Over the past 40 years, business environments around the world have evolved. By operating the company’s owned aircraft fleet more efficiently, effectively managing logistics facilities and delivery network, and strategically placing personnel, FedEx ensures that goods shipped through various services are transported using the most efficient networks, consistently delivering high-quality service.

Today, the demand is much more diverse compared to 40 years ago, including large and heavy freight, cross-border e-commerce products, temperature-sensitive healthcare items, and customized solutions for businesses. In terms of delivery speed and cost, customers are requesting next-day delivery options or a balance between transport time and cost. Additionally, the recent introduction of automation and digital tools has become essential for streamlining operations and enhancing customer convenience. FedEx will continue to be a company that weaves a history of adapting to change.

In July 2024, FedEx announced its plan to expand its Philippine Gateway facility in Clark to more than twice its current size.
