‘Eraserheads: Combo on the Run’ Review
PaperStraw Media attended a media screening of Eraserheads: Combo on the Run this week. I was so excited when I heard the news. During my college days, I was passionate about watching docu-films and indie movies. So when this documentary followed the story of the Philippines’ iconic band, I got so excited because I was among the people who were curious about the story behind the breakup. So what should you expect when watching this docu-film?
90s and 2000s Nostalgia
The Eraserheads were formed in 1989. I was already familiar with their songs when I was in grade school. I remember some of the people around my orbit passing around Stationery notes with quotes from their songs. Some boys I grew up with started learning to play instruments, using their songs as a foundation for their practices. The film is a total throwback, capturing all the essence of reliving childhood memories while, at the same time, being fascinated by the behind-the-scenes happenings that the band was able to miraculously hide from the public and, in some instances, from their own loved ones. As you watch this film, you will say “alam ko yan” because it reminds you of the stories you watched on the news or rumors you’ve heard. However, this documentary film conveys more profound stories behind some news and speculations regarding their infamous breakup.
The Docu Tells the Narrative of Each Band Member
Diane Ventura, the docu-film director and ex-wife of Ely Buendia, mentioned at the press conference that the film focuses on the Eraserheads “reclaiming their narrative.” Well, it did not fail us. The film shows the narrative of each member, and just like what Ventura said, multiple truths can co-exist. You may disagree with their decisions. However, you will understand why they did it.
Film Tells You Minor Issues Can Cause Misunderstanding That Last for Decades
We often hear that open communication is the key to success. It sounds simple, but we may choose not to discuss things in certain situations, especially when emotions run high. This documentary provides many “what-ifs.” The band describes their falling out as similar to breaking up with a lover and its aftermath.
The Documentary Highlights Life’s Changes in Adulthood
In life, there are times when we feel we are directionless and often just surrender to wander with aimless decisions. The Eraserheads were not immune to this sentiment during the peak of their careers. The film shows how changes came silently in working their relationship, and not being able to navigate them as a unit drove them further apart.
Never Miss the End Credits
A common habit of moviegoers is to leave the cinemas as the end credits roll. In this documentary film, don’t do that because you will never miss the important details, especially for the band. There are surprises that await. The documentary film is so simple yet hits you hard about reality of adulting. Moviegoers may perceived different experience in watching it. Eraserheads: Combo on the Run is now showing in theaters but in limited time (March 21 to 23). So better don’t miss the chance. The possibility of streaming this film is up in the air.
