ANIME REVIEW: The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses Season 1 (Spoiler)
Summer 2023 treated us to a slew of rom-com anime, and “The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses” (Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta) jumped into the mix with its grounded romance and a dash of humor. But did it shine? Well, not quite.
This anime, based on Koume Fujichika’s manga, explores the quirky relationship between Komura and Mie. Mie’s glasses are forever misplaced, and Komura, nursing a crush on her, lends a hand in her daily struggles, hoping for mutual affection.
The show offers familiar heartwarming moments, sprinkled with the twist of Mie’s forgetfulness. From sharing notes to serenading her after a scary movie, these scenes bring a warm fuzzy feeling.
However, the plot stumbles on several fronts. It attempts a format reminiscent of “The Dangers In My Heart,” mixing random scenarios to develop Mie and Komura’s connection, but it falls flat. The character bonding moments can feel awkward.
Moreover, the plot leans heavily on repetitive gags and quirks that wear thin, from Mie’s glasses mishaps to Komura’s odd fantasies. The later episodes revisit old topics and add little to the overarching plot, missing opportunities for engagement.
Overall, while the storytelling is decent, it lacks the excitement, quality, or creativity of its predecessors. But here’s the silver lining—the characters. Mie and Komura, despite their quirks, have redeeming qualities. Mie’s kindness shines through, while Komura’s protective nature is endearing. However, they could use more depth.
The supporting cast, sadly, feels forgettable and underused. A potential second season might give these characters a chance to shine.
Studio GoHands handled the animation, with mixed results. While later episodes boasted great visuals, earlier ones didn’t impress. Dynamic camera angles aimed to freshen things up but often felt rough. Emotional scenes, like the park standoff in episode 12, stood out.
The music, voice acting, and sound design all hit the mark.
In a season brimming with heavy hitters, “The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses” didn’t quite measure up. It has its moments, but it lacks the depth, intrigue, and creativity to stand out. Hopefully they’ve gathered enough goodwill from the fans of the genre for a second season to be green lit.
