FA Cup Final: Manchester United Stuns Manchester City with 2-1 Win
The FA Cup final allowed Manchester United fans to breathe a sigh of relief as the team stunned rivals Manchester City with a 2-1 victory. This is the first time since the 2015-2016 season that Manchester United won the FA Cup final.
Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Teammate Kobbie Mainoo followed with a goal of his own just nine minutes later.
City looked like it was staging a comeback thanks to an 87th minute goal by Jeremy Doku. However, the club failed to tie the game by the final whistle.
The Road to the FA Cup Final
Manchester United’s journey to the 2023-2024 final began in the third round, where the club beat Wigan Athletic 2-0. United then went on to beat Newport County 4-2 in the fourth round.
In the fifth round, the Manchester-based club won 1-0 against Nottingham Forest before beating Liverpool 4-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semis, United tied with Coventry City 3-3 but won thanks to penalties.
All that culminated in the club’s FA Cup final win, which was rightfully celebrated by the players, the management, and their thousands of fans.
“2024: the year Wembley turned RED,” the club said on its official X (formerly Twitter) page.
Dismal Premier League
Manchester United’s victory comes just after the club finished in eighth place in the recently concluded 2023-2024 season of the Premier League. The club managed 38 points with 18 wins, six draws, and 14 losses. In contrasted, Manchester City won its historical fourth straight Premier League title.
The dismal finish for United has left many of its fans disappointed and angry, particularly at manager Erik ten Hag. The FA Cup final victory is a much-needed respite for the whole club as it goes on break before the 2024-2025 season begins on August 17, 2024.
